The program provides attendees with knowledge and understanding of paralegals’ role in self-governance and self-regulation to encourage participation in the bencher elections in 2023.  The program includes information on the nomination, running for bencher, and election.  The program is aimed to educate licensed paralegals, paralegal candidates, and paralegal students on the role and responsibilities of a Paralegal Bencher within the Law Society of Ontario, the importance of self-governance, and the importance of paralegal participation, and to raise paralegals’ awareness and interest in taking part in self-governance.

The program explains self-governance as it relates to the Law Society’s mandate to advance the cause of access to justice in the interest of the public. The program explains and addresses common misconceptions about the scope and limits of self-regulation and the Law Society’s powers of self-governance, making a distinction between the powers granted by the Legislature and the Government by way of the Law Society Act and its Regulations, and the powers exercised by the Convocation in making Rules and By-Laws.

The program introduces attendees to current election issues and debates in the area of EDI, governance, and Convocation decorum including the history and the ongoing debate on the Statement of Principles.
